Visit Cattistock

Maiden Newton railway station is located on the heart of the Wessex line between Bristol and Weymouth (5 minutes from Cattistock). Opened on 20 January 1857 by the Wilts, Somerset and Weymouth Railway with the section of their route from Yeovil Pen Mill to Weymouth. This completed their main line from Chippenham to Weymouth, the first part of which had opened in 1848. The station retains two platforms as it is a passing place on the single line between Dorchester and Yeovil. The entrance is on the northbound platform, the side closest to the village.

Cricket has been played in the village of Cattistock since the early 1900’s, and although many of the traditions and formats of the game have changed over the years, the roots of the village remain at the heart of the club. Cattistock have recently enjoyed league promotion, county awards, and regularly reach the later stages of the National Village Knock Out Cup.

Alongside weekend fixtures the club enter two teams into the Dorchester Evening League and have enjoyed both league and cup success over the years. For more information visit www.cattistockcc.org.uk

Situated in the centre of Cattistock and visible for miles around, stands Cattistock’s supremely elegant church tower, designed by George Gilbert Scott jnr in 1872. The monks of Milton Abbey built a church here in C12, although nothing is now left of that structure. The present building is essentially Victorian, although the north transept was rebuilt in 1630 by the Rev. John Mayo, with the exception of the arts and crafts glazing in the east window, depicting St Dorothy, which is from 1923.The current church, dedicated to St Peter and St Paul. The Perpendicular-styled tower has led to the church being known as the ‘Cathedral of the Frome Valley’.

The Village Hall was built in 1926 on the site of some old stables and named the Savile Hall in memory of Francis Ewart Savile, a local landowner who was killed in the 1st World War, and who left a large sum of money which was used to build the hall in stone. The Village Hall has been host to a range of functions and is available for hire for; wedding receptions, parties, coffee mornings, special events. The Fox and Hounds Inn is a small village pub with one bar and a small room with pool table and a modern skittle alley.
